Camel spider location

Camel spiders are primarily nocturnal and flee from. Solifugae is an order of animals in the class Arachnida known variously as camel spiders , wind scorpions , sun spiders , or solifuges. The order includes more than 0described species in about 1genera.


Photos that purport to show creatures six times that size have misleading perspective—the spider is invariably placed in the foreground where the lens makes it appear much bigger than its actual size. During the day they shelter from the intense sun in burrows or beneath rocks, logs or other concealment. They emerge at night to hunt, chasing their prey across the ground and even up walls and trees.

While these spiders are undoubtedly large, they do not have a deadly bite. However be aware that the camel spider (which is not a true spider ) comes from the order of. Vinegaroon is based on their ability when attacked to discharge an offensive liquid which contains acetic aci producing a vinegar-like smell. They like moist, dark, and damp environments which explains why you find them in garages and basements. Around homes, they can also be found in wells and drainage pipes, or under sheds and air conditioner units. Indoors, camel crickets are often found in damp basements, utility rooms, crawl spaces, garages and occasionally in attics.


They often invade structures when it becomes hot and dry outside. There is one in Florida and in the western United States a lot more.

At least one or two reach as far north as North Dakota. The more usual name for them is sun spiders. True spiders are in the Order Araneae, not Solifugae. They are not real spiders of course. According to BugGuide, they are reported from Idaho and we have reports in our own archive of a Solifugid from Idaho.


Middle Eastern members of the order are much larger and are called Camel Spiders. This group of fleet-footed arachnids is known by many names across the globe. Unintelligible screaming and cursing.
