Distal phalanx thumb fracture

The first bone (distal phalange) extends from the tip of the thumb to the knuckle. The second bone (proximal phalange) extends from the knuckle to the base of the thumb. This is the area of webbing between the thumb and the first finger. The thumb connects with a bone in the hand (first metacarpal).

In comminuted crush injuries, treatment of the fracture is of secondary importance. More important is soft-tissue management, i.

Multifragmentary fractures of the distal phalanx will often heal without complications due to the intrinsic stability provided by the soft tissues. FINGER DISTAL PHALANX FRACTURES including MALLET FINGER FRACTURE , FDP TENDON AVULSION FRACTURE and DIP JOINT VOLAR PLATE AVULSION FRACTURE. A distal phalanx fracture is a disruption of the mechanical integrity of the distal phalanx. Tuft fractures are the most common type of distal phalanx fracture in children.

Two-thirds of phalangeal fractures occur in males. Seymour fractures, displaced juxta-epiphyseal fractures of the distal phalanx with associated nailbed injury, occur in children and have been reported to have relatively high complication rates. This fracture at the fingertip is often associated with.

A variety of splinting devices can be used for loose protection.

In the closed crush fracture of the distal phalanx , the L-shaped Alumafoam splint placed. The distal phalanx is the most commonly fractured bone in the hand. These fracture patterns may reside either at the articular, middle, or distal aspect. They are frequently related to sports, with lesions such as the mallet finger and the Jersey finger. Distal phalanx fractures are among the most common fractures in the hand.

A broken finger (also known as a phalanx fracture ) is a very common hand injury. In fact, its the most common bone to break in your whole body, and it represents almost of all broken bones. The phalanges form the fingers and thumb of the hand.

Each phalanx is comprised of a base, proximally, and a hea distally, with the shaft between them. Fracture of unspecified phalanx of thumb. Nonarticular thumb distal phalanx splint.

This thumb nail bed splint helps remodel and shape the nail bed as it heals. The bones in your fingers are called phalanges. Each finger has three phalanges, except the thumb , which has two phalanges. A broken, or fracture finger occurs when one or more of these bones. The intermediate phalanx is not only intermediate in location, but usually also in size.

The proximal, intermediate, and distal phalanges articulate with one another through interphalangeal articulations. Common traumatic injury of the hand involving the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) or distal interphalangeal joint (DIP).

Treatment is closed reduction and splinting unless volar plate entrapment blocks reduction or a combined fracture renders the joint unstable. The proximal phalanx (PP) of the fingers is fractured more frequently than the middle or even distal phalanges. The problems of malunion, stiffness and sometimes loss of skin or other soft tissues associated with PP fracture increases the disability.

The optimum treatment depends on fracture. The pain in middle of finger is caused by fracture of middle phalanx and pain near the knuckle of the hand is caused due to fracture of proximal phalanx. The patterns are the same as for the middle phalanges of the fingers and the treatment is the same. Thumb Proximal Phalanx - Distal. As the bones are larger, it is a little easier.

Because of the importance of the thumb , one is if anything slightly more exacting in demands for reduction at the IP joint level. Wint on pain in thumb distal phalanx : If the thumb is swollen then the cast may become too tight, yes, if there is no swelling have the cast rechecke it may need to be redone. As suggested by the name, these phalanges form the distal row of finger bones, with each phalanx located distally to the middle phalanx in each finger.

Patients should address specific medical concerns with their physicians. Although access to this page is not restricte the information found here is intended for use by medical providers. If it is only the distal phalanx that is fracture then repair of any laceration with careful attention to nailbed repair if needed usually gives appropriate realignment of the fracture. A transverse distal phalanx injury may be unstable and require surgical treatment.

Three sets of measurements were conducted: one with only the distal phalanx (one- phalanx measurement), one with the middle and distal phalanxes (two- phalanx measurement), and one with the entire finger (named three- phalanx measurement) on the instrument handle.
