Reasons to be pretty neil labute

The plot centers on four young working class friends and lovers who become increasingly dissatisfied with their dead-end lives and each other. The trio of plays are connected not by characters or plot but by the recurring theme of body image within American society. This play would be a good suggestion for a school scene study or low budget, full-length performance.


Reasons To Be Pretty, though, left me a little disappointed. In this play, LaBute explores the human fascination with physical beauty. Character: Carly works as a security guard in a warehouse, a job she got because she was pretty, not because she has an aptitude for it.

With his true-to-life cynical and self-absorbed characters and all-too-true social themes, he has firmly established himself as an unforgiving judge of the ugliest side of human nature. LABUTE : No, I’ve never done that before. Part of it was just sheer curiosity and part, I think, was some little light in my head that’s pointing me toward writing for television. He transforms “what we wish we could say” into pretty bits of dialogue.
